September 28, 2018

January 29th, 2018

University of California, Berkeley || Social Matrix Conference Room

Speaker: Dr. Max Neufeind; German ministry of labor and social affairs;

Introduction:

The German program, Industrie 4.0, has provoked a global debate about national strategies to channel digital production technology to support augmentation of work and workers while sustaining company competitiveness. The program is, in the classic German style, a corporatist effort integrating business, labor, and government. Dr. Neufeind has been a spokesperson for this effort. Background on Industrie 4.0 can be found here:

Dr. Max Neufeind is a policy advisor at the German Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs. He was co-responsible for the ministry's widely acclaimed consultation process on the future of work and co-authored the ministry's white paper "Work. 4.0". Recently, he was a John F. Kennedy Memorial Policy Fellow at Harvard University.

Much of the current debate on the future of work is focused on the disruptive potential of new technologies and business models. In its white paper "Work 4.0" the German Ministry of Labor takes a more holistic approach: How will economic, technological, and societal factors shape the future of work in Germany? What can be done to translate Germany’s high-road strategy into the digital age? This talk will provide analytical results as well as policy responses with regard to labor market effects, issues of skills development, and man-machine collaboration.
